About Dr. Odette

I provide naturopathic reproductive health care & empowerment with an anti-racist and anti-oppressive approach so you can be the Boss of your periods, hormones, fertility, peri-/menopause, health & life!

Odette Bulaong Naturopath Toronto

I’m just your average Toronto-born, proudly Scarborough-raised, Filipina-Canadian girl turned naturopathic doctor, fertility, hormone & reproductive health educator, and creator of the KREATE Optimal Fertility Program.

15 years of naturopathic experience (& counting!)

Over the past 15 years I’ve enjoyed helping busy, motivated (& those who need a bit of help getting motivated!) people enhance their fertility, regulate their periods, and feel their best through & beyond menopause. By combining traditional, natural therapies with an evidence-informed practice, I can help support you through various life transitions: from ensuring a healthy menstrual cycle early on to optimizing fertility chances, to a healthy pregnancy & delivery, and all the way through to a balanced transition through menopause. I am dedicated to teaching people how to deal with stress in a healthy way so you can feel amazing at any age & stage of life.

Why I became a naturopathic doctor (aka My Story)

I always knew I wanted to help people improve their health in some way, so after graduating from the University of Toronto with an Honours Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Biology, I went on to pursue post-graduate studies in Workplace Wellness & Health Promotion.

When I was introduced to the concept of wellness, I resonated with the idea that true health comes not just from physical, but also mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.

With this realization, and knowing I always wanted to work in health care, I searched for a career that would allow me to help others take charge of their health and their lives. While researching all of my healthcare career options, I was unexpectedly diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) – a chronic, genetic condition that can lead to kidney failure, dialysis and the need for a kidney transplant. Having known that PKD has taken too many members of my family, I asked my nephrologist what I could do to improve my kidneys and overall health. I was told there was nothing that could be done but wait and address the common symptoms of high blood pressure, pain and kidney failure when the time came.

I was 23 years old at the time and felt completely hopeless and scared since all I knew up to that point, due to my family history was that PKD lead to kidney transplants and dying way too young. I refused to believe this bleak outlook and was not content to simply sit and wait for my kidneys to fail. With my background in wellness, I knew that stress management, nutrition and healthy living could impact health and I knew I wanted to take a proactive approach to manage this lifelong condition – I just needed to learn how.

This led me to pursue a career in naturopathic medicine at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM), where my hope was to learn how to integrate science-based natural therapies with traditional healing practices, in a holistic approach, to help optimize my health – and help empower others to do the same. During my first year at CCNM, I developed severe eczema, and experienced firsthand the amazing ability of naturopathic medicine to heal (through a combination of nutrition & lifestyle changes and acupuncture). Not only did my skin heal completely, but I felt empowered with a nutrition and lifestyle plan that would form the foundation for optimal lifelong health. Upon graduation from CCNM in 2007, I was honoured to receive the Award for Clinical Excellence in Asian Medicine and Acupuncture.

In 2015, I successfully completed the training and examinations to attain Therapeutic Prescribing Rights in Ontario. This ensures I meet the needs of my patients safely and effectively when prescribing high doses of certain vitamins and allows me to prescribe bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT) to those who would benefit from it.

If you’d like to know more about my credentials & training, scroll down to the end for “Advanced Training in Reproductive Health (to support you)”, otherwise keep reading for 3 things I’m passionate about, that help me show up for my patients and help them feel seen.

3 things I’m passionate about…

Teaching you how your amazing body works!

In addition to working with patients in the clinic setting, I am also passionate about teaching. I have 10 years of experience teaching college-level Anatomy & Physiology, Cell Biology, and Prenatal and Pediatric Nutrition. I love the opportunity to educate others about how the body works – whether it’s in class, during patient visits, my articles & video series, my online programs or on instagram!

Health Equity, Inclusive Reproductive Health Care & Social Justice

I believe that every person deserves to have access to compassionate & effective health care – especially when it comes to fertility, reproductive health, and hormone health.  I’m an active member of the grassroots volunteer organization Naturopathic Doctors Dismantling Racism which strives to evolve naturopathic medicine such that all forms of racism and inequity of care due to racial systems are eliminated, in order to provide well-rounded, well-informed, and accessible healthcare to all.

As a proud woman of colour, who focuses on reproductive health, I’m acutely aware of the lack of training in medical racism and the need for reproductive health justice. I continue to take courses on how to provide more inclusive care and prioritize doing anti-racism research so that I can provide anti-oppressive naturopathic fertility & reproductive health care for all. I’m committed to helping people who have too often felt unseen and been dismissed by healthcare providers – especially Black, Indigenous, and all people of colour, and LGBTQ2SIA+ folx – feel seen, heard, supported, and represented in the healthcare system, so they can live their life to the fullest.

Accessible Self-care (P.S. It’s for everyone!)

In addition to helping patients create a Self-care routine that works for them, I do my best to practice what I preach (although admittedly, some days it’s a struggle!). When I’m not working, I recharge by being in nature, practicing yoga (even though I still have trouble touching my toes if I don’t practice regularly!), dancing with Hip Hop Fit, meeting my BFF for BODYPUMP, reading books by BIPOC authors with strong BIPOC female leads, and bingeing K-dramas <3

Advanced Training in Reproductive Health (to help support your health needs)

Pre-conception care and fertility care training:

I continue to take additional training to ensure I stay up-to-date with the natural treatments that will best support the health concerns that matter most to the amazing people I work with including:

Prenatal, pregnancy and labour support and post-partum recovery training:

  • In addition to receiving training in multiple areas of prenatal care, I completed my naturopathic doula training through the Association of Perinatal Naturopathic Doctors to ensure I can provide my pregnant patients with the best possible naturopathic care from the first to fourth trimester. It’s so rewarding to empower people during pregnancy by providing natural therapies they prefer like nutritional support and acupuncture to improve common conditions in pregnancy like morning sickness.
  • I teach people and their partners various labour and acupressure techniques that help them have a smooth, and meaningful birth. In addition to providing individualized prenatal nutrition and supplement support through each trimester, and preparing your body and mind for a smooth delivery, I also provide post-partum naturopathic care to optimize physical & emotional recovery from both vaginal and cesarean births, support energy and optimal post-partum mood.

Perimenopause, menopause, & post-menopause training:

  • I’ve completed and received certification in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) training with the LP3 Network. Although acupuncture, nutrition, herbs and lifestyle changes are often enough to improve common concerns of perimenopause and menopause like hot flashes, if needed, I can safely and effectively recommend bioidentical estrogen and/or progesterone for a short period of time to help provide relief of your menopausal symptoms.
  • I’ve completed additional training to know how to integrate nutrition & lifestyle recommendations, acupuncture, herbs and menopause hormone therapy (MHT) safely and effectively in perimenopause and menopause, including knowing when to refer to your medical doctor for prescriptions and testing that are outside of my scope of practice.

If you’re going through perimenopause or menopause and want support feeling your best through this transition, let’s work together one-on-one to make that happen!

You can also use the above button to book a complimentary no-obligation 15-minute Optimal Health Meet & Greet Visit so you can ask me questions about my approach to helping you feel your best through perimenopause & beyond – before committing to an initial naturopathic visit.

I’m here to help support you at whatever health stage you are atwithout judgement – because I understand that everyone has their own unique healing process. From my own personal experience, I believe that having any “dis-ease” is a chance to look at your life from a different perspective, an opportunity to learn and to grow. I look forward to helping you appreciate that possibility as we work together to help you realize your own unique level of vitality.
