Lab Testing FAQ

Lab Testing Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I get my tests done?

For blood tests, Dr. Odette can refer you to the nearest LifeLabs or CML Patient Service Centre to have your blood sample collected. When you are ready to get your test done, bring the requisition Dr. Odette gave you, with you to the nearest LifeLabs and they will collect the sample from you.

Some tests, like salivary hormone testing, require you to collect the sample on your own, and either drop it off in person or by mail to your nearest LifeLabs where it is then sent to a specialized laboratory for analysis. Dr. Odette will explain the correct procedure for your test to make the process as easy as possible.

Here is a link to the LifeLabs website where you can find the location and hours that fit your schedule.

How much do the tests cost?

The cost of tests varies depending on the test. There are over 100 blood tests and an additional 60 tests that Dr. Odette can order for you to be performed on urine, stool, saliva, breath and other tissue samples. She will tell you the price of the tests prior to ordering your test. If you decide to have the test ordered by Dr. Odette, she will complete and give you the appropriate requisition(s) and you will pay for the test at the clinic. You do not have to pay for anything once you get to the LifeLabs location for your specimen collection.

How long will my results take?

Depending on the blood test, results are often received in a week, but some blood tests can take longer. Food sensitivity testing and salivary hormone testing take longer, with results often being available in 3 weeks. When Dr. Odette receives your test results, she will contact you to make a follow-up appointment to review the results and any treatment additions that need to be made.

Are tests covered by OHIP or by my extended health insurance plan?

No. Laboratory tests ordered by a naturopathic doctor are not covered by OHIP.

Laboratory tests are not typically covered by most extended health insurance plans. Speak to your insurance company to find out if any tests ordered by a naturopathic doctor are covered by your plan.

Can I get these tests done with my family doctor?

Yes – depending on the test. Your family doctor can order most of the blood tests Dr. Odette recommends. Dr. Odette encourages you to see your family doctor for your annual physical exam, when they will likely order many of the screening tests and other tests listed above, depending on your health needs.

Your family doctor may not be familiar with the benefits of tests such as IgG food sensitivity testing, urinary organic acid testing, and salivary hormone testing. Dr. Odette can help you determine if these tests are important to guide your treatment plan.

Many people choose to do tests with Dr. Odette when they cannot get an appointment with their family doctor at a time that works with their schedule, they do not have a family doctor or they do not want to wait for an appointment with their family doctor.
